The work of the THSC Special Needs department includes consultations, online training and applications, an online support group, special needs articles in the THSC Review Magazine and online blog, and THSC Conventions special needs programs.

Peggy is the former MACHE (Minnesota Association of Christian Home Educators) Special Needs Coordinator whose home school journey started 14 years ago when her oldest child was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome.  Additionally, Peggy understands special needs issues even more because of the many learning opportunities that came with being the oldest of 14 siblings, 10 of which were adopted into her family with special needs, and being a foster parent for special needs children while home schooling her own children.

Peggy, and her husband Doug, live in Conroe, TX, where they still home school the youngest of their three children (20, 18, and 12).

Below is a listing of the talks I currently present.

Special Needs Homeschooling Talks
What You Need to Know When Homeschooling a Special Needs Student
Home schooling is the ultimate form of an individualized education and thus it’s not a wonder why so many parents of special needs children consider taking a look at this option for schooling their children.  In this talk, Peggy Ployhar, the Special Needs Team Lead for the Texas Home School Coalition (THSC) will go over specific state regulations for homeschooling a special needs student in your state, resources available to you, common curriculum options, and lots of practical advice in-between that she has gained over her 14 years of homeschooling two students with special needs.

Customizing Your Curriculum
As a Special Needs Team Lead for the Texas Home School Coalition (THSC), and the former Special Needs Coordinator of MACHE (Minnesota Association of Christian Home Educators), Peggy Ployhar speaks to one of the most frequently asked questions she receives: “What curriculum would be best to teach the unique needs of my child?”  Whether you have a child who has a specific diagnosis or one who just struggles in one area of school or another, Peggy addresses in this talk how to take the curriculum you already own, or plan to use, adjust it to meet the specific needs of your child, and consequently dissolve the struggles you are currently seeing in homeschooling your unique child.

How to Write and IEP and Then Use it Effectively in Your Homeschool
An Individual Education Plan (IEP) is a tool public and private school special needs teachers use to set progress goals for their students.  Join Peggy Ployhar, the Texas Home School Coalition (THSC) Special Needs Team Lead, for a very "how-to" oriented introduction on the basics of writing and implementing an IEP, homeschool style.  This talk will take you through the entire process of the hows and whys of an IEP, the legality of the using an homeschool IEP based on the American Disabilities Act and Individuals with Disabilities Education Act,  as well as many teaching strategies on how to reach IEP goals for specific diagnosis and learning struggles.

Homeschooling Special Needs High School
Home schooling high school with your special needs child does not have to seem like a daunting prospect. Peggy Ployhar, the Texas Home School Coalition Special Needs Lead, has graduated two sons with special needs.  In this talk, she has a lot of great ideas to share, from how to pick curriculum, write a transcript, prepare a transition plan based on the needs of your child, and records you must consider if your child will need accommodations and modifications in college, in testing for college entrance, or for workforce placement.

Creating Lessons Plan for Your Special Needs Leaner with Cheap Online Resources
Peggy Ployhar, the THSC Special Needs Team Lead, has a Pinterest board featuring over 6,000 online resources for special needs homeschooling parents.  In creating these boards, Peggy has discovered countless free and cheap resources parents of special needs parents can use to teach their special needs students at home.  From teaching basic elementary concepts to high school level courses, in this talk, Peggy will highlight her favorite resources for parents.  Come and see how you can save some money while meeting the specific needs of your unique learner using cheap online resources.

Skills & Transition Planning for Homeschool Special Education
Any parent knows a student’s learning goes beyond the basics of reading, writing.  But, parents of special needs students know this truth even more and also realize their need to be methodical in teaching transitionary skills for post-homeschool success.  In this talk, Peggy Ployhar, the THSC Special Needs Team Lead, takes parents of special needs homeschooling students through a plan that helps them be intentional in setting up a transition plan that will ready their student for life beyond homeschool.

Using Unit Studies to Homeschool Through High School
Many parents slowly progress away from hands-on learning as their student nears high school level classes.  But, for students who have difficulty with understanding abstract concepts through traditional instruction, the removal of multi-sensory and discovery style instruction makes the leap to high school not only challenging but also often very discouraging.  In this talk, Peggy Ployhar, the THSC Special Needs Team Lead, goes over practical ways to build high school credit courses for a homeschool student using unit studies as she shares three different techniques she used with her own unique high school learners.  You will leave this talk encouraged and equipped to start, or continue, your homeschooling high school journey using unit studies.

Homeschooling Students with Profound Learning Issues
Over the past 20 years there have been many products created for the homeschooling market which help parents home school students with mild learning issues.  But, that is not the case for parents who have non-verbal, visually impaired, severely delayed and/or physically handicapped students.  Instead, these parents are usually left to try to piece together their own curriculum, if they even dare take the leap and try home schooling their child.  Peggy Ployhar, the THSC Special Needs Team Lead, will share in this talk how to approach home schooling for children with profound issues as she gives practical, hands-on ideas as well as ways to approach subject specific requirements when teaching children with profound learning issues and/or delays.

Biblical Encouragement for the Special Needs Parent
While the world tells special needs parents, and their children, that disability/struggling areas should be used to excuse poor behavior, the bible holds Christians to a different standard - one of love, compassion, and continual biblical training.  Speaking towards the scripture, "Train up a child in the way he should go...", Peggy digs into the bible to show parents how to live up to this standard without losing their focus, or their minds.  From the experience of being a parent and a foster-parent of multiple special needs children, Peggy Ployhar has first-hand knowledge of the rigorous demands put on parents who are raising, training, and home schooling children with special needs.  Woven with personal stories, biblical truth, and lots of encouragement, this talk will truly speak to hearts of parents who want to raise their special needs children as God has called them to do.

Shedding Light On Depression:
Current studies show almost 10 percent of the American population is affected by depression each year and depression among children is increasing at a rate of 23% per year.  Peggy Ployhar knows first-hand how dark and limiting depression can be.  As a biblical counselor, Peggy transformed her experiential insight into depression as God revealed the steps He used to pull her out of the pit of despair.  Peggy not only shares from the point of view of someone who has personally struggled with depression and a biblical counselor who has both studied and counseled others in this area, but also as a parent of two children who have overcome their struggles with depression.  The talk "Shedding Light on Depression" biblically dissects the clinical reasoning behind depression and the current methods of treatment while revealing how Jesus, the true Light, can dispel even the most cavernous darkness and bring the light of joy into the life of anyone willing to trust in His ability to transform their heart and mind.

Gut Health And Learning Part I:  How the Gut Affects Learning
Hippocrates is quoted as having said "All disease begins in the gut", and researchers are just beginning now to realize how true his statement really is.  Armed with the latest research and personal success stories, Peggy covers a wide range of information in this talk that will make you think twice about assumptions that the gut is disconnected from learning.  You will walk away from this talk not only knowing more about how your digestive system works, but also how it works in tandem with so many other factors you were probably never aware of.

Gut Health & Learning Part II:  Stopping Learning Glitches Through Gut Healing
More and more research is now pointing to the fact that many children who experience learning glitches also exhibit bowel issues.  Yet amazingly, medical professionals are still slow to acknowledge this research and talk about the growing number of people who have been able to restore their gut health through natural means.  After realizing that gut damage was the underlying cause not only to her children's learning issues, but also a lot of issues she herself was dealing with, Peggy Ployhar has a lot to share in this up-and-coming area of special needs intervention.  This talk is filled with practical advice and natural ways to reverse gut damage.

Gut Health & Learning Part III:  Re-Training the Brain After Gut Healing
As a child perceives the world around him, so does he construct his mental pathways to deal with these sensory inputs.  But, what happens when those inputs are not based on clear thinking, but instead skewed by a gut related sensory brain fog?  Unfortunately, once healing of the gut is established there are still mental pathways that need to be changed so restorative healing in the brain be worked on also.  In this talk Peggy Ployhar, takes a spiritual, mental, and physical approach to teaching towards gut related learning and behavioral issues.

Christian Parenting Talks
Be Angry...And Train Your Kids
Parental anger and the character training process happen to be the two largest struggles of any parent, but rarely are the development of the two undertakings ever considered to be interrelated.  After many struggles with parenting anger, which stemmed from anger issues she carried with her from her upbringing, Peggy found herself seeking scriptural answers to her outbursts.  Peggy Ployhar, in this talked titled “Be Angry...And Train Your Kids”, shares what God has taught her about how the anger provoking instances that child training brings are tools meant to enrich the character training process. You will walk away from this talk comforted regarding any past struggles regarding parenting anger and equipped for the character training process that still lays ahead for you and your children.

Faith Sharing with Your Children
We all desire for our children to have vibrant faith lives.  Getting your child to a point where he or she develops a unique and special relationship with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is not a science, but yet the bible does provide many instructions to parents on how to share their own faith life to make this process a natural transition.  In this talk, Peggy Ployhar dissects some of these scriptures and then shares real life experiences on how to put those concepts into practice.  And, as Peggy can attest, these truths provide an abundant harvest to any parent who cultivates and plants with care into the hearts of their children.

Resting on Your Side of the Yoke
Consider this…In the United States we have entire industries claiming they can provide for you a state of true rest.  Yet, instead of delivering on their claims, the industry just grows bigger and broader each year claiming more and delivering less.  Why is rest so elusive?   In this talk, Peggy Ployhar will explore the most common deceptive strategies Satan uses to allure you away from where true rest can be found – Jesus Christ.  If you have been feeling less than rested lately, then the truth revealed in this talk will be just what your soul has been searching for.

The Impact of Influence
If you desire to make an impact with your faith, you need not look any further then where God has planted you.  In this talk, “The Impact of Influence”, Peggy Ployhar takes her audience step by step through the beginning of Ephesians 5, as she dissects the Word of God as it relates to living a life of influence in the ordinary, thus making every moment of life extraordinary.  You will leave this talk encouraged to make the most out of where God has planted you and inspired to stay strong in the places God has allowed you to make an impact for His kingdom.
